INDIAN RAILWAYS GREEN ENERGY INITIATIVES

 WIND ENERGY

As there is large wind potential existing in India and therefore, policy guidelines exists for taking up initiatives for setting of wind mill plants in the wind rich areas like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra,, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu to provide green and clean energy to IR.

JOURNEY SO FAR:

As on 31.03.2021, cumulative capacity of 103.4 MW windmill power plants have already been commissioned over IR. Wind based power plant of 10.5 MW (for non-Traction) and 10.5 MW (for Traction) capacity in Tamil Nadu, 26 MW (for traction) capacity in Rajasthan, 6 MW (for non-traction) and 50.4 MW (for traction) capacity in Maharashtra has been installed. This green energy project of Indian Railways assumes great importance in the wake of the growing concern of environmental pollution and global warming issues on one hand and the depletion of fossil fuels on the other hand and also shortage in energy demand and hence is in complete agreement to the “2014 Paris Agreement of Climate Change”.

GIANT LEAP TOWARDS GREEN FUTURE

This green energy project of Indian Railways assumes great importance in the wake of the growing concern of environmental pollution and global warming issues on one hand and the depletion of fossil fuels on the other hand and also shortage in energy demand and hence is in complete agreement to the “Go-Green” slogan propagated internationally.

Indian Railways first ever Wind Mill Project of capacity of 10.5 MW was commissioned on 30.03.2009 in Triunelveli Distt. Tamilnadu for meeting energy demand of Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai. These wind turbines have generated about 100 million units so far. The project has also been registered with United Nations frameworks Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) which will earn carbon credits of 20000 CERs per annum.

The Project being the first of its kind in Indian Railways and by any other Government of India Organization. This green energy project of Indian Railways assumes great importance in the wake of the growing concern of environmental pollution and global warming issues on one hand and the depletion of fossil fuels on the other hand and also shortage in energy demand and hence is in complete agreement to the “Go-Green” slogan propagated internationally.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT

  • Harnessing Green energy for sustainable development.
  • Power will be used for captive consumption.
  • Wind Mill Capacity adequate for meeting ICF’s requirement which is about 23 million units per year. The proposed wind power plant is expected to generate 23.1 million units per year.
  • Being green energy it will reduce carbon emission which will in-turn reduce the ill effects like global warming etc.

WIND ENERGY PROJECTS UNDER INDIAN RAILWAYS

WIND MILLS

Power Generated from Wind Mills is used for captive consumption. Expected Annual Generation from Wind Mills is 25.9 million units(28% PLF) and this will meet ICF’s Energy demand. Excess energy generated from Wind mills will be sold to TNEB. Project qualifies for CDM benefits and annual revenue of Rs.2.0 crores is expected from carbon credits. Project serves as a corporate responsibility towards green energy, taking care of the sustainable development aspect. Since being green energy it will reduce carbon emission which will in turn reduce the global warming etc. Daily Generation Report is available on ICF Railnet Website(Electrical Dept link).

FUTURE PLANNING

Indian Railways has also planned to set up additional wind mill plants in future.

Commissioning of the Plant:

  • The work has been physically completed.
  • Wheeling and Banking Agreement (WBA) and wheeling agreement (WA) signed with DISCOM and TRANSCO.
  • Other formalities related with commissioning of wind power plant like Interconnection approval from TRANSCO & Metering approval from Jodhpur Discom etc. are completed and the trial runs for stabilization are in process.
